AI In Sports Broadcasting
Fans tune into sports programs for many reasons: it is entertaining, sports can be a social activity, they have a financial stake on the event, they want to watch their favorite teams and players, as well as several other potential reasons. It is up to those broadcasting the event whether it be on television, radio, or another medium to provide an engaging experience for the fan to make them want to continue following the event and come back for more later on.
The use of artificial intelligence can create a more entertaining viewing experience for those watching a sporting event. The biggest change we have seen in recent years is automated highlights. An AI system can analyze a game and produce a highlight reel from the game for viewers to watch automatically. This impressive development can help editors focus their efforts elsewhere while also delivering important content to the fans.
Another recent development of AI within broadcasting is the personalized experience that fans can now have. For example, AI can learn what the viewer likes to watch and recommend programs or matches that are live that the fan would probably enjoy watching. This can be beneficial for fans who want to find the channel of their favorite team quickly. In addition, AI has been developed that can provide personalized commentary for different sports and teams for the fan based on their interests and previous viewing experiences.
It will be interesting to see the new ways in which AI can improve sports viewers' experiences in the coming years. As a fan, have you noticed any of these changes when watching sporting events or perhaps other ones? How do you think AI will continue to be integrated in the viewing experience of sporting events?

Great post! As a fan, I've seen AI make watching sports easier with automated highlights and personalized recommendations. These changes help me catch up on games and find new matches I'll want to watch. In the future, AI could do even more, like giving personalized commentary and real-time stats. It's exciting to think about how technology will keep improving how we watch sports.
ReplyDeleteHi Charlie, thank you for your comment. It was interesting to read about your experience with the automated highlights. They are definitely a helpful way to catch up on the games and scores while still seeing important parts of the action. We agree that the future of sport combined with technology continues to be exciting and it will be interesting to see what the future holds as both continue to evolve. DeleteI feel like I can relate to this blog post topic quite a bit. Being on a college school schedule and having to be hunkered down in the library most Sundays I generally miss watching my favorite football teams play on Sunday. The AI generated highlight reels always allow me to stay up to date on the games and I get to see some of the most athletic clips of the day with just the click of a button. I don't have to sit through 3 hour long rewatches of the game just to stay in the loop which helps me save time but also allows me to stay involved with my hometown team. Moreover, I think AI will continue to be integrated in the viewing experience of sporting events though virtual reality. I think there will be a sort of AI that allows fans to be fully immersed in the stadium and will experience being physically present at the game from the comfort of their own home. VR is a sort of AI that is gaining popularity and continues to grow so I don't think it will be long until it taps into the sports market and creates an immersive viewing experience for the fans.

I really enjoyed reading this article. I am very interested to see how teams plan on implementing AI into the fans' viewing experience. You mentioned personalized commentary for different sports and teams for the fan based on their interests and previous viewing experiences. I am curious to see how this could propel the viewing experience for fans. I'm a big fan of the New York Knicks and have to come to love listening to our commentators, Mike Breen and Clyde Frazier. They are universally recognized as one of the best sports commentator duos in basketball, and I have almost come to take them for granted. I feel that fans of many sports teams have come to expect their favorite commentators to announce the games, and I hope that AI doesn't take that away from the fans in an attempt to personalize their experience.
ReplyDeleteReally interesting post. The topic of AI going into sports broadcasting is very real and super relevant to our world today and the upcoming future of sports. I think it is weird that an AI development can now personalize the experience for fans. I didn't realize it was that advanced within the sports world. The life of sports is becoming so easily accessible and ready to use. To be honest, I do not watch much sports on TV, however, a lot of sports games come up on my tik tok page. It definitely personalizes the user experience for me and shows me teams and players I like and talk about. When I interact or watch the video, it keeps coming up and I learn more information about the team that I wouldn't have before. I wonder what the new ways AI can improve sports systems. Do you think this is a bit invasive and creepy?
