Will these trends shape the future of AI's use in sport?
Forbes recently posted a list of the 5 things that will be most important for AI in professional sports, but they left out one key way which might end up being the aspect of sports that fans interact with the most. The first of Forbes predictions is already prominently used across several sports, “AI for Predicting Player Performance and Injury Prevention” like the MLB’s “Statcast”, which measures a huge amount of data about each player’s movements and results.
Their second trend is “AI For Improving Sports Equipment” which is being employed in many different sports to create safer and more effective gear. Similar to their first trend, their third point was “AI for Athlete Training” which discusses using the same technology and data during training to optimize each athlete’s performance. Their fourth was “AI for Fan Engagement” which discusses Wimbledon’s use of AI for captions on highlight videos, and data-gathering capabilities for personalization of advertisements. Their fifth trend was “AI for Fairer Judging” which highlights the ways that AI systems have been implemented, and may be implemented across sports, like boxing’s use of AI to detect cheating or foul play, and FIFA’s decision to use AI to track player positions and the location of the ball.
While similar to fan engagement, the ability for broadcasting and streaming services to utilize AI to personalize a broadcast or add to the experience for TV viewers could be the most commonly interacted with aspect of AI in sports for most fans. It could allow for more simultaneous broadcasts in multiple languages, create instant graphics or highlights for display to only the viewers who it believes wants to see them, and most importantly impact every televised sport across the planet. NBC is already planning on using AI in its live broadcast sports, and once it does it is only a matter of time before other networks catch up.
Which of these trends do you think will have the biggest impact for fans in relation to AI? Which will the players and coaches find the most significant? Are there any ways AI will impact sports that they left off the list?

Reading your blog was super insightful about AI and the different aspects of how it is now entering the market of sports. I noticed that they are not only getting involved with the actual players inside of the sport but with the media that is publicising the sport itself. In terms of your question I would say my main take away from your blog on how AI may affect fan would be the broadcasting additions it will add. I believe if fans have that experience to personalize there broadcast or TV experiences it would be a game changer for loyal fans especially since it will one up there regular viewing times. I believe that the feature of being able to have these outlets in several languages can have such an effect on the international business and fan viewing for any sport in the world. I obviously think that players and coaches will appreciate the injury preventions and health features for the sake of them being able to perform for one another. The coaches may or may not feel a threat on AI because it could possibly take their job from then. While on the other hand one thing they left off this list that AI could make it way to is stadium experiences, I don't know how specific implementations that could be made but I think it would change the game. What do you think about stadiums implementing something with AI?

I think that eventually AI will be a part of everything, but stadiums make a lot of sense. It could be through targeted advertising, creating graphics, videos, or games in real time for the jumbotron and other screens, or with concessions like the LA Clippers new stadium where they won't have any checkout at their concessions stands, fans can just walk out and scan their fingerprint or face and they will be charged automatically. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwi05Ln1p-KEAxUjBfsDHeKMAZcQFnoECCAQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fftw.usatoday.com%2Flists%2Fclippers-new-arena-intuit-dome-the-wall-explainer&usg=AOvVaw3hSBv6kJsgbXR11BcRJ6EV&opi=89978449
ReplyDeleteIt's very interesting to see how far AI has come in such a short period of time and the use of AI in sports is no exception. I think that the AI capabilities for personalized ad's will have the greatest effect on fans. This will create a unique experience for each individual and will make the ads more effective. I believe that AI for fairer judging will be the most impactful for players and coaches because it takes away a very human element of sports. Sports are usually judged by a referee and taking that away could lead to a very different sports world. The use of AI will only be enhanced in the coming years and its interesting to see how it is shaping sports.
